Judy Bibby (1947–2021) was a British artist whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in Bootle, Liverpool, she discovered a natural talent for drawing and painting early in life. Despite leaving school at fifteen with no formal qualifications, she was accepted into Southport School of Art. After completing two foundation courses there, she continued her training in Fine Art (Painting) at Liverpool College of Art.

In 1968, Judy moved to London to study at the Royal College of Art, where she was awarded a Master’s degree with distinction. Her success there led to a rare early-career teaching post at Lancaster Polytechnic.

Judy’s work was deeply rooted in personal experience, exploring figurative themes through a variety of media including oil on canvas, drawing, sculpture, and ceramics. A significant period in her later practice was a residency at Cill Rialaig in Southern Ireland, where the solitude and surrounding landscape had a profound influence on her work.

Alongside her practice, Judy played an important role in the wider arts community. She helped establish the Moira Kelly Gallery in Islington — a space that hosted many leading contemporary artists — and taught at institutions including Central Saint Martins in London and Innemore School of Art on the Isle of Mull. She later co-founded the New Richmond School of Art in Surrey with sculptor Mike Major.

In honour of her life and work, the Judy Bibby Art Fund has been established to provide financial assistance to first-year students at the Liverpool School of Art and Design — helping the next generation of artists access the opportunities Judy fought for and cherished.
Donations to the fund are warmly welcomed.
